In his latest CareerJournal.com article (www.careerjournal.com),

Tim Johnston reveals that he recently was called in for three interviews.

After months of sending resumes out into the ether, job seekers rejoice

at a chance to sell themselves in person. Yet, writes Johnston, job

interviews are stressful in their own way, and more than a little

tricky:

"Certainly, I want to put my best foot forward in an interview,

but what does that mean? I don’t get nervous very often in interviews,

and, as a former actor, I feel confident that I can carry off any

number of personals implicit in the suggestions of various interview

experts. But my core question is this: Should an interview be a great

performance, a completely candid and spontaneous exhange, or something

inbetween?

"Let’s face it: Many times, the success or failure of a particular

interview is completely out of our hands. At a recent weekly meeting

of JobSeekers, a local support group I’ve attended for the unemployed

or those soon-to-be, a recruiter told the audience of 60 that he eliminated

anyone who came to an interview dressed in a brown suit or wearing

an unusual tie. Why? Even he could not articulate the reason."
