Because President Obama declared the counties of central New Jersey a federal disaster area, individuals who live or have a business in these counties may qualify for tax relief. Deadlines for business taxes falling between August 27 (the day of Hurricane Irene struck) and October 31 have been postponed until October 31.

Penalties or interest will be abated only for taxpayers who have an original or extended filing, payment, or deposit due date. That includes an extended filing or payment due date falling within the postponement period.

Anyone who lives or owns a business outside the covered disaster area must call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227. The IRS takes into account those whose primary business is done in a disaster area, even if the business itself is not based there.
