Andrew Philbrick was just barely out of college when he saw a horse farm in ill repair just four miles out of Princeton. The thought it could become a housing development was unacceptable to him, so he found a way to purchase it, and created Hunter Farms.
A life-long rider, Philbrick has represented the United States Equestrian Team nationally and internationally and was ranked in the top 100 of the BCM World Jumper Riders. His horses won seven Grand Prix in one year, including two World Cup Grand Prix, and he competed in the USA Olympic Team Trials and much more.
It’s this love for the sport that makes Hunter Farms and its riders successful.
"We are a local riding stable, but our scope is international," he said. "I’ve trained riders and horses in the World Equestrian Games, for the World Cup Finals and the USA Olympic Team Trials. Yet we also offer lessons and a summer riding program."
The magnificent farm boasts two indoor rings, a grand prix-sized jumping field, and an Olympic-sized arena. There’s also European-style horse walking and a grass jump field. More than 40 horses make their homes there in well-maintained stalls.
"It’s unusual to have a farm that competes at a high level and offers a school for all," Philbrick added. "We work with people who have never ridden before, starting at 5-year-old through adults. Yet we also work with aspiring Olympians."
Summer is a great time at Hunter Farms, which features a popular Summer Riding Program. Kids from 8 to 13 with varying ranges of experience may enjoy riding Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There still are a few spots available in the program that began June 20 and runs through August.
"What makes our program special besides the instruction is it covers all areas," noted Philbrick. "Stable management, jumping, shows, crafts, and games make this a fun summer activity for kids."
It will be a busy summer for Philbrick, too, who will travel all over the country to represent Hunter Farms in horse shows, including two $30,000 Grand Prix and two $25,000 Grand Prix events.
In fact, Philbrick has designed two of the courses. Hunter Farms is the home for Princeton Show Jumping and mounts several nationally acclaimed United States Equestrian Federation-licensed horse show.
"Hunter Farms is the best of what’s great about a riding stable, a riding school, and a competition program," he said. "We’re a full service equestrian center with meticulous horse care, thoughtful instruction, and personalized training."
