Why would anyone buy Birkenstock socks? There are dozens of well known hosiery manufacturers in the world, so why Birkenstock? Well, because no one knows feet like Birkenstock. Their socks fit the natural contours of your foot, providing cushioning and fit just where you need it. They accomplish this by using a variety of materials in specific amounts and locations on the foot to craft the perfect sock.

Since everyone’s needs are different, from cushioning to wicking, from allergies to circulation, so too are the socks. Birkenstock uses natural fibers and blends, as well as synthetics, to give you happy feet. By combining either cotton, merino wool (which doesn’t itch), cashmere, Lycra, nylon, and even recycled plastic bottles (extremely well cushioned!) together in designs and weaves unique to each model of sock, your debate will not be how many pairs, but which ones!

So whether you wear Birkenstock footwear or not, these socks create a supportive, comfortable environment to slide your footwear over. They are also great to just scoot along your cold kitchen floor. Available in a variety of weaves, patterns, and colors to satisfy even the toughest sock connoisseur, there’s nothing like stockings for a stocking stuffer!

Steppin’ Birkenstock, 12 Chambers Street, Princeton, 609-921-8411. Also at 530 Union Square Drive, New Hope, PA, 215-862-9800.

Princeton Airport’s Gift of Adventure

When you are looking for a gift that will always be remembered, try giving an Introductory Flying Lesson from Princeton Airport. Whether the person has expressed an interest in learning to fly or you just wish to give a gift of adventure, an Introductory Lesson is fun for people of all ages and gender.

The airport is open every day from 8 until dark year round when the certificate can be redeemed by appointment. An FAA-certified flight instructor will demonstrate the pre-flight inspection of the airplane to insure air worthiness. Then the person will be seated in the left seat of the airplane with the instructor in the right seat. Both will have their hands and feet on the controls. The instructor will talk the student through the take-off.

For $59 the person will be in the air about 20 minutes and for $119 the person will be in the air for one hour. The time in the airplane will count toward a license if the person decides they wish to pursue a pilot’s license. Either way, your gift will always be remembered. There are many other suggestions for those who are licensed pilots or for those who wish to become one. Check the website.

Pashmina Shawls Still serve their purpose at Landau’s

Several years ago Pashmina Shawls (a blend of cashmere and silk) became an international fashion accessory. The super-sized shawls, measuring 36 by 80 inches, retailed for $265. Landau’s on Nassau Street in Princeton sold every single one it had in stock – and couldn’t get all it needed.

Flash forward two years: A customer came into Landau’s with a story to share about a trip she had just made to Bloomingdale’s in New York. She asked if they had a basic black Pashmina Shawl. "Oh no," the Bloomingdale’s representative responded. "They are no longer in fashion."

At Landau’s the Pashmina Shawl is still "in function." Landau’s saw the practical value of this full sized shawl for added warmth outdoors in the bitter cold over a winter coat or jacket; indoors as an additional layer when watching TV, reading, or napping; or in the summer in a chilly restaurant, airplane, or movie theater.

"These shawls really work – all year round," says Robert Landau, proprietor of the longtime Princeton clothing retailer celebrating its 50th year in Princeton. "When we heard they had dropped off the fashion radar screen we immediately contracted with an Indian contractor to supply us the shawls at about one-fifth the ‘craze’ price."

Result: Pashmina Shawls in more than 30 colors are available now at Landau’s. The price may not be "fashionable," but it is reasonable: $59.

Spa Therapia

Attention, men. Yes, you, men. I know you’re out there. And I know you have, well, shall we say mixed feelings about shopping? OK, you hate shopping. Someone just came to your rescue.

On Wednesday, December 7, Spa Therapia and Triumph Brewing Company present their third annual "Men’s Night Out," from 7 to 9 p.m. At this "stress free shopping" night, men are invited to stop in and enjoy some of the spa treatments Spa Therapia offers and sample different brews from Triumph while knocking off a good portion of your holiday list.

Spa Therapia, a medically-supervised day spa, offers several lines of skin care products and cosmetics as well as spa treatments like facials, waxing, massage, salt scrubs, body wraps, microdermabrasion, pedicures, manicures, and more – you know, stuff girls crave. She’ll love you for it.

A few years ago I got a $200 gift certificate to Spa Therapia (for, let’s just say, a round-number big girl birthday), and I was so thrilled that I made it last the whole year, with three different treatments over three visits.

This gift-giving season Spa Therapia is recommending gift certificates

for its Signature Massage: 50 minutes, $75; 70 minutes, $95; 90 minutes, $125. This is a personalized massage experience incorporating Swedish techniques and other modalities to focus on specific trouble areas. A Signature Massage is created by you and your therapist for the ultimate experience.

Another option is the Ultimate Customized Facial, 65 minutes for $105. It begins with an expert skin analysis, followed by intense cleansing, toning, exfoliating with papaya and pineapple enzymes, extractions, massage, masking, and treatment creme chosen specifically for your skin type. The Ultimate also includes a scalp, hands, and foot massage.

As a special holiday promotion, every gift certificate comes with an eight-ounce lotion from the spa’s new line of private label skin care products called Results by Spa Therapia.

Combining the finest formulas, highest standards, and the latest techniques for anti-aging, these products are designed to facilitate total wellness and beauty. The line includes O2 Rejuvenating Creme, Willow Herb Soothing Serum, Derma Pore Cleanser, Spot Fix, and Vitamin C Serum.

Both the spa and the Results product line are under the supervision of Thomas A. Leach, M.D, medical director of Princeton Center for Plastic Surgery.

Spa Therapia, 932 State Road (Route 206 South), 609-921-8854, www.spatherapia.com.
