Removing under eye bags, or upper eyelid drooping, can have a dramatic impact on the appearance.

Dr. Nicole Schrader can perform eyelid lift surgery, or blepharoplasty, to handle these common concerns. It is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed for women and men.

"In addition to making you appear older, droopy or baggy eyelids can make you appear tired, sad, or angry," Dr. Schrader said. "And, there’s no ‘right’ age.

“The eyes are subject to your genetics, so lower under eye bags or droopy upper eyelids can run in the family. Even younger patients can see a dramatic improvement in their appearance and self esteem after undergoing an eyelid lift."

Eyelid lift surgery can be performed not only to improve the look of the eye area but also to create functional improvement. For example, a drooping upper eyelid from excess skin or fat can impair vision. In some cases, aging, hereditary factors, trauma, infection, or inflammation can cause issues an eyelid lift can repair. After Dr. Schrader performs the eyelid lift surgery, patients have a more awake and refreshed appearance.

Dr. Schrader also uses non-surgical techniques to enhance the eye area’s look: Restylane, Juvederm and the patient’s own fat. Restylane® and Juvederm® are hyaluronic products (proteins that are naturally found in the skin) which are injected in the hollow region of the lower eyes and can also be used to reduce the laxity of the upper eyelids by improving the position of the eyebrows. They generally have few side effects and can last up to eight months. Botox injections can also be used to reduce the crow’s feet wrinkles in an eyelid lift procedure, further enhancing the overall appearance.

"Sometimes, a cheek lift surgery may be the best solution to minimize under eye hollowness and dark circles," Dr. Schrader noted. "I evaluate each patient to determine why he or she has under eye dark circles so I can recommend the most appropriate treatment."

Some dark circles can result from shadows from bulging under eye fat or bags. Eyelid lift surgery will soften these as the fatty bulges are removed. But some persistent dark circles are a result of genetics, thin under eye skin, or lower lid hollowness, making the patient a candidate for cheek lift surgery.

"When we look at the big picture, a lot of beauty and feeling better about ourselves comes down to taking care of issues on the face," said Dr. Schrader. "I’m pleased to offer a variety of treatment options."
