It’s all about having fun at DanceWorks of Mercer County, even when teaching the most refined dance technique.

DanceWorks, now celebrating its ninth year, recently moved into two huge studios with sprung wood floors in Pennington Shopping Center. It fosters an environment that lives up to its slogan: “The Magic of Dance Awaits You.”

Co-Directors Karen Martin and Suzie Schnoor created their studio to share their love of dance while still being able to teach proper techniques for recreational and aspiring dancers alike. The vibe is friendly and homey, plus their students want to be there because they’re having fun enjoying the activity.

“We believe everyone should have a great time when learning dance,” Martin said. “Our classes are structured so that every student feels special because each and every one is important to us.”

This inclusive philosophy means DanceWorks appeals to toddlers and serious dancers, teens and adults, female and male. There are summer programs for kids as young as 4 years old that include a theme and a craft; summer dance workshops for kids 6 through 12 with a final performance to show off their skills and the costumes they’ve made; summer theater dance for tweens and teens who want to hone their techniques to improve their theatre performances; and evening classes for 11 through adult covering the most popular dance styles.

“Our evening classes are available on a drop-in basis with our Dance Card,” Schnoor explained. “Many of our graduates come back and take evening classes with us over the summer. But anyone can take summer programs at DanceWorks; you don’t have to be one of our regular students.”

Regardless of the program selected, at DanceWorks the fun focus is on technique, not “tricks.” This helps all students appreciate the art form. For those who want to compete or dance professionally, this attitude is key: it’s the technique that matters, not the trophy.

During the school year, DanceWorks’ menu of classes is extensive for tots through adults. Jazz, modern, lyrical, hip-hop, ballet/pointe, tap, and more bring future stars and casual dancers together in the same fun atmosphere that’s at the core of this studio. At the final recital, instructors join their students in dance.

“We love what we do and can’t picture doing anything else, and we want to share that with our students.” Martin added.

“Our summer programs are kicking off, but there still are some spaces left,” Schnoor said. “Of course our drop-in Dance Card evening classes are very flexible, but parents looking for something fun for their kids can still get them into our summer programs.”
