Focus on the Finishing Touches. You have made most of the decisions related to your kitchen or bathroom project. Your appliances are selected. Cabinetry color choices are made, and you’ve decided the material and color of your new countertops. Finished, right? Well, not really. Some of the most important decisions of your project still need to be considered!

Plumbing Fixtures. For your kitchen faucet, are you going with a stainless steel finish or chrome? According to Melissa Nini, one of Cranbury Design’s project managers, who regularly shops with clients, one of the newest color trends for plumbing fixtures is brushed brass, or champagne bronze. “These are warmer colors of gold than the traditional brass finishes we are used to seeing.”

In the bathroom, plumbing style choices we see in the shower include hand-held style shower heads that connect to a slide bar, as well as the more traditional fixed shower head on the wall. And of course, rain shower heads remain very popular. And some clients have all these choices in the same bath!

Tile. Angela Cavaleri has been a project manager with Cranbury Design for more than 10 years. She has seen design trends come and go as it relates to tile for kitchens and baths. According to Angela, “subway tile in a variety of sizes, materials, and colors still remains a sure bet selection for clients who want a timeless look.”

The choices of subway tile material are vast, with marble, stone, glass, metal, and ceramic styles being very popular. Mosaic tiles available in many beautiful colors and materials add another layer of style to tile layout designs. Mosaics can be used as a border in a kitchen or bath, or can vertically run down a shower wall and be offset to add a more striking focal point. Plank style “wood look” tiles are also very popular.

Hardware. We consider hardware pulls and knobs to be the jewelry of your cabinetry. It is easy to get completely overwhelmed with the myriad choices available to you. Crystal, burnished brass, copper, and chrome are all finish choices. For a modern, transitional, or a minimalist look, what do you choose? And what size works best for the size of your drawers and doors in the kitchen or bathroom?

Take your time when making your choices and don’t wait to the last minute and rush through a decision. As with all your finishing touch decisions, what you select can make the difference in the getting the finished look you are trying to achieve.
