Health giant #b#Johnson & Johnson#/b#, headquartered in New Brunswick, recently announced that it will donate $200 million in cash and medicine to the United Nations in an effort to reach people in poor countries. The donation kickstarts the company’s five-year program “Every Mother, Every Child,” which is intended to help treat medical issues for and educate more than 400 million women and children in developing countries.The sweeping program includes:
Mobile Health for Mothers, in which an estimated 20 million expectant and new mothers in China, India, Mexico, Bangladesh, South Africa, and Nigeria will receive mobile phone messages on prenatal health, reminders of clinical appointments and calls from health mentors.
Intestinal Worms in Children. J&J plans to donate 200 million doses a year of its intestinal worm drug menendazole to roughly 40 countries in the next two years.
Safe Birth Programs in which the company will educate women about everything from HIV to birth asphyxia.
Research and Development Innovations in AIDS and tuberculosis treatment.
The Southern New Jersey division of #b#Wachovia#/b#, a Wells Fargo Company, recently awarded $143,000 in grants to seven Mercer County organizations: Trenton Business Assistance Corporation; the Family Guidance Center of Hamilton; the Mercer Alliance to End Homelessness; New Jersey Community Capital; the New Jersey Coalition for Financial Education; the NJ Department of Community Affairs’ Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development; and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County.
