Conair Corp, manufacturer of hair dryers, consumer appliances, and personal care products, is reviving plans for expansion of its facilities in East Windsor.
The company, headquartered in East Windsor, plans to construct a 450,000-square-foot expansion of its warehouse and distribution operations in the township after being offered more than $26 million in incentives from the state to remain in New Jersey.
The expansion of the company’s facility on Milford Road is intended to store and distribute hair dryers, curling irons, and small kitchen appliances. The construction is estimated to create 446 new jobs, according to a filing with the state Economic Development Authority (EDA).
“We had a plan to build about four or five years ago that we placed on hold because of the downturn in the economy. We’ve activated it again,” said Conair senior vice president John Mayorek.
According to Mayorek, Conair expects to hire 75 to 80 warehouse workers and 60 to 65 office staff during the project’s first phase.
In June Conair was awarded some $26.7 million in tax credits by the EDA under the Grow New Jersey Assistance Program with the intent of convincing the company from moving it distribution operations to Glendale, AR.
The East Windsor planning board on July 16 discussed adjustments to the site, including lighting, landscaping, parking, and traffic pattern changes in order to accommodate the new workers hired under the plan.
During the meeting, Mayorek said the benefits offered by the Milford Road facility include easy access to the New Jersey Turnpike and its designation as a foreign trade zone. “The East Windsor location is the world headquarters for Conair,” Mayorek said. “We want to keep it that way.”
