Medina Consultants, a civil and structural engineering and inspection firm working in highway design, mass transit, and environmental permitting, has been acquired by T.Y. Lin International for an undisclosed amount.
Lin, an international infrastructure consulting firm based in San Francisco, works primarily in transportation areas such as airports, bridges, ports, and rail systems. One of its more widely known projects was the 2007 design of the south terminal at Miami International Airport.
Founded in 1989, Medina grew to be the third-largest Hispanic-owned civil engineering and land surveying firm in the U.S. It has its headquarters in Hackettstown and also has offices in New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. The firm will now operate as T.Y. Lin/Medina, and founder Robert Medina will stay on as a senior vice president.
Medina was called in as the prime consulting firm for the $2 billion New Jersey Turnpike expansion project that addressed the bottleneck south of Exit 8A, where twelve lanes narrow to six. Construction started in 2009 and is expected to be completed in 2013.
Medina’s part of the contract is for 4.8 miles in Washington and Hamilton townships, where the lanes merge. The firm is in charge of the design, environmental and engineering specifications and estimates for the construction, modification, and reconstruction.
The contract also calls for replacing bridges on Gordon, Sharon, Windsor, Perrineville, and Old York roads.
In a statement, T.Y. Lin president and CEO Alvaro Piedrahita said, “This is a landmark acquisition for T.Y. Lin International and will expand the number of clients and range of services offered by both firms.” The acquisition adds 125 to T.Y. Lin’s ranks.
