Headwaters Energy Services (HDWR), 1501 New York Avenue, Lawrenceville 08638; 609-807-9308. Theo Lee, principal. Home page: www.headwaters.com.

Headwaters Energy Services, a division of Provo, Utah-based Headwaters Inc., has left American Metro Center in Hamilton to return to its New York Avenue offices, from which it moved to Hamilton in 2007.

This energy services company, headed by Thom Lee, split from Headwaters Technical Innovation in 2007 due in large part to a growth of its business — turning coal into fuel for automobiles. This concept, radical though it may sound, is not really new, Lee said in an interview in November, 2007. It was used in World War II and in South Africa for 40 or 50 years. “Oil was embargoed, so they used coal instead.”

The technology on which Lee has been working uses the same principles, but has to do more with coal. Not only does coal have to be turned into a liquid that can be used in vehicles, but it also has to be clean. “The specs are getting more and more strict,” Lee said, referring to emissions standards imposed by governments. In addition, the coal to liquid ratio has to be high enough to justify the cost.
