Between the Lines

Sometimes our editors forget that people do not always

read this paper for its brilliant long stories of from 1,500 to 5,000

words. Our editors need a reminder that often the brief, utilitarian

stories and listings are what win our readers’ attentions.

Marlene Kurtz of Princeton Day School wrote to thank Nicole Plett,

our arts editor, for her 1,000 word article (short, by U.S. 1 Preview

standards) about a three-day residency at Princeton Day School for

woodcarver Armando Jimenez (U.S. 1, February 23):

"Thank you for your wonderful article on Oaxacan woodcarving.

The piece did attract area artists and collectors to the exhibit.

Armando’s visit was incredibly successful: he sold all 35 pieces that

he had brought with him and took special orders for about 25 more.

The whole school community loved his work, and he was also invited

to do a demonstration at an elementary school in Hopewell.

"Most importantly, the high level of appreciation for and interest

in his work was something that he had never experienced before, so

I think that he left here with a much greater sense of his worth as

an artist. Thank you again so much."

Even the smallest listing can draw lots of attention. One small

article in our Survival Guide section (U.S. 1’s version of news-you-can-use)

proved to be just what one reader needed. Last week a woman appeared

at U.S. 1’s door bearing a box of chocolates. She was grateful, she

said, for an article we published in the Survival Guide last spring.

This article — less than 400 words — described a new certificate

program at a community college. The article wasn’t flashy, but it

led this reader to a new career. After she earned the certificate,

she was able to escape from a job she disliked and get a more suitable

position. Even more important, she said, was that thanks to a contact

she made at the college, she is now enrolled in graduate school.

We do not encourage anyone to bring or send gifts. If we write about

someone or some program, we are just doing our job. But the spontaneous

arrival of these chocolates melted even our hard-hearted editors.

The chocolates lasted two days in the U.S. 1 lunchroom, but the smiles

lasted longer.

On the subject of usefulness: With today’s paper offices throughout

our circulation area also are receiving one copy of the new U.S. 1

Business Directory. One free copy of this 296-page book went to each

office on our delivery lists. This business-to-business resource guide

for Central New Jersey has 5,400 listings, divided into 205 categories.

It’s not exactly summer beach reading but utility is its sole purpose

and thousands of people in central New Jersey now realize that.

The bad news is that if you didn’t get a directory at your office

this Wednesday, March 22, you missed out on the free copy. We stand

firm on the "no more free copies" issue. If you think your

office didn’t get one, maybe someone else in your office took it.

If your office happened to be closed on Wednesday, that’s the way

it goes.

But the other good news is that they now sell for just $12.95 if you

come to our office, or $16.95 if you send us a check (see coupon on

page 14). Copies will also soon be available at area bookstores. If

you have seen one, you know they are more than worth the price.
