Free wireless internet service is now available in the Mercer County Clerk’s public search room at the county Courthouse Annex on South Broad Street in Trenton.
According to Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello, the availability of Wi-Fi will allow the public and professional document researchers a way for their wireless-enabled laptops or mobile devices to access the Internet.
The new wireless access is meant to supplement a new computer system for the recording and research of land and property records launched earlier this year.
That system replaced a 15-year-old system and improved the speed and efficiency of public record searches on deeds, titles, mortgage and lien documents, and maps and other properties.
The Wi-Fi system was fully activated through a Verizon network after several weeks of testing. The upgrade will remain a continual pilot project to keep pace with evolving advances in wireless technology and data security.
The upgrade was funded through a special trust fund earmarked for improvements in the clerk’s Office. Money for the fund is generated by recording and user fees charged by the office, and not county tax dollars. The Wi-Fi equipment was provided through a shared service arrangement with Mercer County Office of Information Technology.
