On May 12 Grounds for Sculpture (GFS) will open its largest array of exhibitions ever and cut the ribbon on its massive new East Gallery.
Five exhibitions will debut on Saturday, May 12, including Ming Fay’s brazenly playful and brightly hued installation, Canutopia, the premier exhibition in the 7,500 square foot new East Gallery. The other main galleries will offer Sharon Engelstein’s True or False collection of colossal inflated nylon sculptures; Willie Cole’s E Pluribus Unum, a transformation of discarded everyday items into surprisingly probing visions; Marilyn Keating’s Natural Curiosities, fanciful objects from nature; and The Impact of Art, a perspective on persons with disabilities sponsored by the NJ Progressive Center for Independent Living.
“We are ratcheting up what we are able to do on every front,” said Executive Director David Miller. “Our amazing new East Gallery is not only a stunning exhibition space, but also a performance and rental space. It’s a great addition to the park and the community.”
More news of note: For the first time the public opening of a GFS exhibition season is being held on a Saturday, affording people an entire weekend to enjoy. Members and invited guests may take part in a private reception and ribbon cutting on Friday, May 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. GFS is always seeking new members to support its mission, and there’s still time to join and take advantage of the Friday night celebration. “There’s so much going on here, right on the heels of this landmark opening,” Miller added. “Sunday, May 13 is Mother’s Day and we have special treats for mom. The grounds are gorgeous; so much is in full bloom. It’s a great time to come, a true feast for the senses in every way.”
Miller aptly describes GFS, which is open Tuesday thru Sunday year-round, as 42 acres of “improbable paradise, spectacularly beautiful, artistically magical, diverse and accessible, but not quite where you’d expect to find it.” The variety of things to see and do means there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It’s a welcome retreat and a delightful surprise right in Hamilton, Mercer County.
